Calheta is located near Morro and is a small fishing village. It was the region where the reforestation was first introduced to Maio. Morro is about 11 km from Vila do Maio, and has about 1100 inhabitants. It was in this region that the infra-structures for reforestation were introduced for cattle breeding purposes.
The village is now mainly a fishing village where you can see local fishermen bring in their catches on a daily basis. Most of the beaches in this area are deserted (except for a few cows and donkeys grazing on the wild beach grass). Visitors can see what is considered one of the largest forests in Cape Verde, which is not that big, but still a surprise on such a small sandy island. There are still many species of trees such as eucalyptus, acacia, etc. In addition, new trees are planted annually with the aim of not only extending the perimeter but also to conserve the species.
Calheta de Baixo has two fine white sandy beaches, sheltered by the rock formations at both ends.
Buying this land has the additional advantage of having a local property consultant to assist and advise to help construct and fit-out the new property.
